World’s tallest building as art and fashion

The Burj Dubai recently opened in Dubai (scene of a rather fantastic Snow Leopard Vodka party recently) and there’s been some fantastic shots and video which give you a sense of just how grand and fantastic the building is.

Curzon over at ComingAnarchy.com (and via top writer Warren Ellis) took some great pictures of the opening event. And then there’s this video of the view from the very top of the building:

A Rebel with a Cause

15It feels like we’re in the 1980s again… 100% organic t-shirts with ethical slogans like SAVE THE WORLD are back – in part thanks to Katharine Hamnett!

Katharine Hamnett is, of course, the Queen of Green behind these t-shirts. Over two decades ago she set-out an agenda to help SAVE THE WORLD by giving a percentage of all her t-shirt sales to charity. Perhaps more importantly, with celebs from Madonna to Princess Diana wearing her t’s, she harnessed the media exposure to raise awareness of the issues harming our world.

The reason Hamnett is ‘hot’ once again is not as a result of Eighties nostalgia but because what she strived to achieve 20 years ago is gradually becoming a reality – the fashion world is beginning to catch up with Katharine Hamnett and her ideals.

In the 80s and 90s Hamnett would traipse around fabric fairs searching endlessly for organic cotton which was 100% harmless (no pesticides) only to be told there was no demand. Today, it is a very different story and she is now in partnership with Tesco who recently ordered 350 tonnes of organic cotton from India.

From her buttons made from palm nuts to her fly zips guaranteed as recycled and recyclable steel she truly is the epitome of the eco-fashionista.

Despite now being in her 60s, she has no plans to retire but her ambitions now stretch beyond purely fashion. She is now focusing her energies towards building a concentrated solar-powered, low-tech power station in Africa a far cry from Bond Street and Fifth Avenue.
